And They Love You

Newly appointed "It"-band Yeah Yeah Yeahs played an unannounced "secret" gig at Luxx that turned out to be not-so-secret judging from the number of people who showed up at the Williamsburg joint. And although the club's sound system left a lot to be desired, the band was successful in making the audience of fans, friends, and other assorted scenesters forget about the lousy speakers.

The trio (girl in front Karen O., guitarist Nick Zimmer, and Brian Chase on drums) blasted through songs from their EP as well as from their upcoming full-length debut. The band showed off their New Wave/ punk rock sensibilities with a set that was loud, raw, and overly energetic. In other words, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs displayed why they sell out every gig these days and why there is a rumored major-label bidding war for them.

However, it was Karen O. who proved she could play with the big boys, and often, she played harder. Kitted out in a yellow basketball jersey with nothing underneath except two strategically placed pieces of black electrical tape, Karen's energy level kicked into high gear as she hit the stage and never waned throughout the 35-minute set. In between fits of spastic dancing, she poured beer onto herself and the enthusiastic front row. She looked as if she was having the time of her life and made me want to front a rock band myself. ~S.
