The Thermals: Bring the Cure
Northsix, Brooklyn, May 2004

thermals How much do I love the Thermals?

Enough to get out of a sick bed just four days after surgery to see them power-up and rock Brooklyn, tonsillectomy be damned.

The first time I saw the band (CMJ showcase, October 2003), they were non-stop propulsive, ripping through song after song, hardly leaving room to breathe in between. The next time I saw them play (Northsix, March 2003), they still bit into their songs with force and speed, but took time in between to tune up, chat, and goof around on stage the way a band can in a smaller venue not filled with industry types. This time, the Thermals hit a balance between the previous performances, running two or three songs straight through, then talking and joking good-humoredly before launching into another lightspeed round. The brevity of the band's songs meant they were able to play most of both albums and their EP, including crowd favorites "No Culture Icons," "Everything Thermals," "It's Trivia," "Let Your Earth Quake, Baby," and "Remember Today." Further song specifics escape me, since it was around that time the Vicodin kicked in. I may not have left the show miraculously healed, but I definitely left on a rock and roll high.
