Siren's Song
Coney Island, Brooklyn July 2003
The line-up for this year's Siren Festival was the best in its three-year
history. The festival is quickly becoming an
attraction not only for NYC hipsters but also for fans of quality music all over the US
(and beyond) who
made the trek out to Coney Island to check out some of the best bands on the current indie-music circuit.
Modest Mouse were the headliners, but we preferred other acts like the Datsuns,
Sahara Hotnights, and Hot Hot Heat (who were in particularly good form that day).
Also
worth mentioning are The Kills, Idlewild, New York upstarts The Witnesses and !!!, whose
particular
style of shake-your-booty jams is finally getting some attention now
that "dancefloor punk" is the new "garage rock".
But if you don't go to this event for the music, there is always the view:
seeing pasty sun-starved night-crawling
scenesters out in the daylight makes for some interesting scenery:
every kid was decked out in his or her very best shades, belts, and trainers. However,
slouchy suede boots at the beach is a faux-pas no matter how cool you think you are.
