Boulevard of Not So Broken Dreams
Green Day's Rock Opera Confirmed for Broadway Run

After a ten-week run at Berkeley Rep that included mulitple record-breaking extensions, American Idiot, Green Day's multi-platinum album-turned-theatrical spectacular, is heading east for a turn on the Broadway stage. Previews begin on March 24th at the St. James Theater in New York City with a scheduled April 20th opening night. The press release describes the show as following "working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East, as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration" in a post-9/11 world. Every song from the album is included in the stage production.

"Experiencing American Idiot on stage in Berkeley was incredible," says Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong. "We have really enjoyed working with Michael, Steven, Tom and the cast. The energy and chemistry of the group is contagious. Michael Mayer was able to bring life to the characters of American Idiot and Tom Kitt's musical arrangements are breathtaking. We're so proud that the show is coming to Broadway."

When the 21-track album was originally produced six years ago, it was intended to be listened to as a proper rock opera in the same vein as The Who's Tommy so a musical theater production (and subsequent move to Broadway) seemed like a natural fit. Casting has yet to be announced (members of Green Day are not actually in the show) although the creative team is firmly in place: Christine Jones (scenic design), Andrea Lauer (costumes), Kevin Adams (lights), Steven Hoggert (choreography), Brian Ronan (sound), and Darrel Maloney (video and projections).

O Captain! Our Captain!
Michael Jackson and His Tight White Pants Return to Disney

The fans have spoken and Disney has listened.

Twenty-four years after it premiered, Captain EO, the Michael Jackson-starring-George Lucas- produced-Francis Ford Coppola-directed 3-D theme park attraction is returning to Tomorrowland. Ever since the passing of the beloved MJ, it had been speculated EO would be resurrected, even though a representative from the park claimed it to be untrue.

Nevertheless, fans continued to petition and this December, it was announced that, yes, Captain EO and his "ragtag band" of creature companions would be soaring back through the outer reaches of the cosmos to play a limited engagement at Disneyland beginning in February 2010.

Heather Hust Rivera announced via Disney Parks Blog: "The attraction’s return to Tomorrowland will provide new audiences the opportunity to experience the original 3D production for the very first time, as well as a nostalgic look back for longtime fans wanting to see “The King of Pop” in a rare performance created for the big-screen, just one more time. 'Honey I Shrunk The Audience' will be closing sometime in the next few weeks to make way for the Captain’s return."

That means those of us who didn't get to see it the first time (even though we were at Disneyland in '87 and somehow managed to not make it a must-visit destination despite being a Michael Jackson fan...no, I am not bitter) get a second-chance to see MJ fight evil in a world without a love of music as he performs an early version of "Another Part of Me". We also get to watch as he pops and spins, Moonwalks and glides while wearing a kick-ass studded Stormtrooper-style jacket and the tightest white pants this side of the galaxy.
