I'm Too Sexy for My Clothes

Fashionfollower.com has received quite a bit of mail from people requesting information about women's style in the rock fashion world. There are several reasons why that area hasn't been explored very much. For one thing, this site started out simply as a rock boys best-dressed list and as it grew, the site just expanded on that. Secondly, women's fashion is covered nearly everywhere these days so why should it be covered here? Thirdly, women tend to be more involved with professional stylists which isn't the worst thing in the world (because let's face it, many of them need one), but it does subtract from the element of personal style. Oddly enough, it has always been the men that tend to be more creative and thus trendsetting on their own terms.

Those are the reasons why in the past chicks have been over-looked here. However, a trend that has become quite rampant recently has become the fourth reason for not including women: the obvious use of skin to sell records. It seems as though the current roster of chart-topping femmes are trying to one-up each other as to who can wear the least amount of cloth. Granted, some of the women have talent. However, for many, that's debateable.

After the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, the talk was of Britney Spears' strip tease routine and whether it was or was not inappropriate. One article in her support claimed Madonna has been doing the same thing for nearly 20 years. But there is a world of difference between Madonna and Britney, mainly the fact that Madonna has always written most of her music and has been in control of her career (can anyone imagine Britney heading up her own record company ten years from now?).

That's not to say Britney's performance was deplorable ( the fact that she covered a Stones' tune was more unnerving). But why single her out? Christina Aguilera's outfits that night were no better (were the two teen queens having a contest?). Not an awards show passes without the Destiny's Child girls showing off their to fab abs. And Lil' Kim...oh that Lil' Kim. Whether it's a red patent superhero costume or a purple mermaid with one boob hanging out, she seems to have an outfit for every occasion (or half an outfit).

Perhaps the main problem here is not just the lack of fabric but lack of style! All of these women work with fashion stylists so why do they all make such terribly tasteless choices? In almost every instance, their clothes are over-done and cheap-looking. It looks as though they all shop at the mall or something.

So, for all of you who have patiently awaited women's coverage here, your time has arrived. Ladies and gentlemen, I reveal to you the top Least-Dressed Women In Pop.
