Show and Tell
IMA Robot: Rise of the Machine
Sin-e, NYC, October 2003
 |
Making up for a show that was lost during the Blackout of 2003, IMA Robot
made an unscheduled headlining appearance during their stopover in NYC
supporting Hot Hot Heat. The crowd at Sin-e seemed mostly to be industry
(probably due to the fact that the show was so last minute it wasn't even
in the newspapers) but even the low-key nature of the evening didn't slow
the band down for a minute. Singer Alex Ebert twitched, kneeled, and crawled
across the stage while sporting a sparkly silver cardigan, matching tennis
shoes, and white and red stripes painted under his left eye. He led
the band through a set of songs from their self-titled debut that just so happens to
be one of our favorite records of the year. But although it is Alex who is front
and center in this operation, a big round of applause definitely goes out to the
rhythm section of drummer Joey Waronker and bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen, whose
funky playing is just so damned brilliant we're glad he gave in and joined the band
in the first place. | |
