And yet, for all of the New Wave and 80's artists usually linked to the band,
not once has there been any mention of hip-hop.
Sure, rap may not immediately come to mind
after hearing their music but then again, there is some seriously witty wordplay on both Hot Hot
Heat records with Steve on lead vocals. Just trying to keep up
with the frenetic pace of some of his songwriting is an exercise in concentration.
In their recent NME cover story, Steve did in fact mention previously
living with "some random hip-hop dude" where in turn, he himself became a master-freestyler.
Does he agree with us that this living arrangement is reflected in their music?
"Definitely! Just read 'Oh Godammit' along with a beat. See?" | |

So we try it out ourselves. "Lack of consequence has got me making decisions based upon truth or dare decision making no faking I end up taking, karate, she's naughty, I call shotty, my body will never live up to these expectations...I still make invitations."- (from "Oh Godammit") Just try saying that ten times fast and without coming up for air. It's not easy. Speaking of NME, yes, HHH were recently coverboys which shouldn't be too much of a surprise. Because, as they do with most new music, the British music press enthusiastically jumped onto the Hot Hot bandwagon before most American mags had a chance to say, "Hot Hot who?" "We're growing slowly in the US," says Steve. "In the UK, the press has gone a little crazy." |
