It was all flying tresses, flared jeans, and head-banging when the Datsuns took
over NYC's Bowery Ballroom and made it feel like 1973 all over again.
Supporting the release of their debut self-titled LP, the foursome from New Zealand
brought along all of the showmanship and frenzy of the 70's bands that
inspire them, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick. Routinely
launching himself off of various pieces of equipment, lead vocalist/bassist Dolf kicked,
jumped, and wailed his way through gems like "Harmonic Generator", "Sittin' Pretty", and
"MF From Hell". Phil proved to be quite a limber boy; the
backbends he performed whilst playing his guitar would impress most yoga instructors (although
glimpses of his face were rare under the long blonde mane). And Christian's extended
guitar solos made the audience forget they were in a club rather than arena.
The length of the Datsuns' show (around 90 minutes)
was another refreshing retread of old school rock that is a welcome change from the current
trend of short sets and no encore. All we can say is, "Bring on more in '74!"
