The first time I saw Ambulance LTD was in 2001 at Luna Lounge in NYC. The line-up was quite different (save for singer Marcus Congleton) and the "LTD" had yet to be added to their name, but I recall being impressed with Marcus' soft yet effective vocals and the band's indie radio-friendly sound.
Well three years, several roster changes, and a legally necessary-name-change later, I'm glad to say that I'm even more impressed than before. At the Khyber this particular night, Elefant was top on the bill but it was evident that the capacity crowd was there for Ambulance. The set was short but tight and consisted mostly of tracks from their self-titled debut including the "Dear Prudence"-inspired "Heavy Lifting", the super-catchy "Primitive (The Way I Treat You)", and country-rock flavored "Anecdote" (my personal favorite).
However, the coolest thing to see was the group of indie-rock girls in the front row singing along to every song and realizing how far the band has come in such a short time. Words: S. Appel | Photos: Toni Simmons
